I was supposed to have several coworkers over for a brunch this a.m. Several said they would stop through and there were a few definites that were to be on time... well, 2 1/4 hours later - no calls and no shows. :'(
What a terrible lack of courtesy! As Greg mentioned, now you know not to and don't have to invite them again. Impossible that every single person had an "emergency"; they simply have no common sense.
Or common courtesy! That's just tacky. They lost out on what sounds like great food and won't be invited back for more, I can imagine! I worked with a group like that. They were nice enough, but twice, even though everyone on my team said they would go to a certain event, I wound up being the only one who showed. I don't know why people are so rude.

Doesn't make any sense to me either. My word is..well, "my word". If I say I'm going to or not going to do something... then unless a terrible tragedy occurs, you can count on my doing or not doing it. Period. All they had to do was either say no or at least call and say the mysterious "something came up". Yeah, I'd be disappointed that they couldn't come but I wouldn't be standing by the door, watching for cars....

And another thought ... what's this business about saying "maybe"? You're planning a nice shindig with food, you need to know if folks are gonna be there are not, you don't need no stinking maybes! I tell "maybes" that I'm sorry they can't commit to being there and "maybe" they'll be invited next time! Which they AREN'T, of course.
"Maybe" my Aunt Tillie's ASS ... sheesh.
Then again, you sound like a much nicer and more tolerant person than I. You deserve better treatment, Cyn.

Thanks Tammy. <shrug> I'm just about over the hump of frustration now... I'm not going to waste any more time or energy on them. For the moment - they aren't worth it. Perhaps in the future they can/will earn my trust but it won't be as soon as tomorrow; that, I can guarantee.
