One no-cost move is to get a little quantification on your butt, specifically
ischial tuberosity width.
You're probably in the same range as 98% of the rest of the world - but it would
seem like a good idea to know for sure because if you're a statistical outlier
that will narrow your choice of saddles a great deal.
Contrary to what some may think, measuring sit bone width does not need to
involve a trusted friend, a set of calipers, and a quart of tequila.
Instead, find some material that will dent and hold the dent and then sit on it
long enough for your sit bones to make their mark.
Inch-thick styrofoam works, as do some cardboards, or even a sheet of paper on
the right-textured rug.
Once you have a center-to-center measurement on the dents, you can start looking
at the usable width of various saddles.
Certainly width isn't the whole story - or even most of the story.... but it's
definately a "go-no-go" thing.... if the saddle is too narrow there's no hope.
Same if it's so wide that your thighs chafe...
