If I were to ride down to the park with my six-year old son, then I would wear it to set a good example for him. If I were to ride along the boardwalk to simply go slow and admire the scenery, I probably wouldn't wear a helmet. However, I almost never do that sort of ride. Virtually all of my riding involves traffic (on road rides) or difficult technical or high-speed sections off-road.

Why do you think that wearing a helmet is a good example?
There are people here who might allow that people wear a helmet based on blind faith that it will somehow prevent 85% of head injuries, or because they are or have become so frightened of the risks of cycling that they wear one even knowing that the putative benefit is vanishngly small, but why would you want your son to do such things without a good reason, or to be so frightened of such a safe activity?
