Brenda, I'd suggest that you choose a particular plan and read the
entire book that pertains to it. That way, there is no guesswork on
    your part.

Here's a webpage that has short summaries of several LC books:
    http://www.lowcarb.ca/atkins-diet-and-low-carb-plans/

Until you have a chance to choose a plan and read the book, there is a
lot of information on the Atkins website that can get you started on
    low carbing:
    http://atkins.com/

There is also the FAQ for alt.support.diet.low-carb:
    http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc/

I'd also recommend that you stick mostly to whole foods and limit or
avoid low carb convenience foods, especially while you're trying to
    get started.

    Take care.

Brenda, do you test your blood sugar? That way you can see exactly what
effect different foods have on you. Jennifer's advice for the newly
diagnosed is like opening a window on how to help your body.

I'm 43 and got diagnosed diabetic 6 months ago, so I know exactly what you
mean about being too young! I started low carbing (actually, eating as my
meter dictated) immediately, and feel really good on it. I've also got
reasonable control of the diabetes, which I hope means a longer and
    complication-free life.

Good luck - and if you want to talk diabetes, you might want to try
alt.support.diabetes? And by the way, hang on to your doctor, an
appreciation of the benefits of low-carb for diabetics is very rare!

    Nicky.
