Triglycerides are the storage form of fats. When the white fat (adipose)
cells can't hold more triglycerides, the liver and skeletal muscles take
them up. This is at least part of the reason for fatty liver frequently
found in type 2 diabetes as well as a contributor to insulin resistance
in the skeletal muscles. Even with lower triglycerides such as mine
(less than 60 mg/dl) and HDL (at about 68 mg/dl) there is still insulin
resistance. There is also a condition in lean type 2 diabetics where the
fat cells can not hold my triglycerides - lipoatrophic. "... humans
with congenital generalized lipodystrophy (CGL) (63) are born with
extreme paucity of white fat. These subjects exhibit profound insulin
resistance, hyperinsulinemia, hyperglycemia, enlarged fatty liver,
varying degrees of triglyceridemia, and very low levels of serum leptin
