So? I've installed a couple headsets with 2x4's and a hammer... on my
bikes. They've worked fine afterwards, and none has shown ill effects.
If it were someone else's bike, I'd carry it down to the local
borrow-a-tool shop (Bicycle Repair Collective, Portland) and do it
right- but I've done enough headsets to know when the improvised
methods aren't going right.

I've seen it done too - even the pipe wrench thing isn't all that
scary as long as it's about removing an old headset you're gonna trash
anyway.

Like most things, if you go slow and take your time, chances are you
won't destroy anything before it either works or you give up.
