Surely it depends on the use to which you put it.
For protection against minor bumps and bangs, I'd say 3-5 years as
Danny and others have mentioned.
If you wear it, as others on here do, to comply with local regulations
(for example wife won't let you ride without one), I can't see any
reason to change it.
