anyone thrown on a pair of 5"/6" front single crown shocks and if so how does it ride??

The NRS is a XC bike that's just designed for that sort of thing. Of course, the extra length of the forks will drastically alter the geometry and make it ride like a chopper. And the extra leverage will put greater stresses on the head tube possibly leading to failure. It will also match the short rear wheel travel really well.
So in summary, it's a really good idea...

Giant specifically says NOT to do this with any of their XC bikes.
