first bump. Personally, I'm looking at a minimum of £250 - £300 for a
secondhand bike.
At this price, avoid rear suspension, and possibly disc brakes. I had
to fix a Carrera (Halfords) bike at the weekend, and whilst it wasn't
brilliant, it wasn't actually that bad for the money. The "sealed"
bottom bracket turned out to be a pile of [censored] though, and certainly
not sealed - on a bike less than a year old it had virtually failed.
Even so, unless someone can advise otherwise, it is a brand I am
considering, on the basis that I will need to do some work to bring it
to standard (including new B/B!).
My previous mountain bike (I started MB'ing in about '85/'86) was a
custom built Overburys' job, and I certainly can't afford something like
that now. It got nicked about 10 years ago, and I bought an expensive
tourer with the insurance money.
Now I have the urge to get off the roads again! Some of the Snowdonia
trails I've walked I would love to bike, outside of the voluntarily
banned times of course.
