I am not poor in that I make a few hundred dollars more per month than
my minimum expenses, but I certainly could not afford the type of
lifestyle that someone with similar education and work experience 30 or
40 years ago would have. This is due to the cost of higher education
being much more expensive due to tuition and housing prices increasing
more rapidly than inflation in general, student financial aid
decreasing, and wages being stagnant or decreasing for all but a few
top income earners over the last three (3) decades. I have also chosen
a profession that does not have an artificially restricted supply, and
puts the safety of the public as a higher priority than maximizing
profit.
