My spouse wants to give me a birthday present in form of a garmin
forerunner like device. To measure running distance, minutes per mile
    etc.

I know that at least ForeRunner 201 uses some non standard batteries.
I have enough experience with nonstandard batteries to know that in
the end, I will be screwed because the devices are usually
intentionally built to ruin their batteries to force me to buy more of
them, at inflated prices (why else would them make them nonstandard).

So, I would like to buy something like garmin forerunner, but that
uses standard AA or AAA batteries. Any suggestions?
