I'm almost done building my first cyclocross bike. The frameset is a Cannondale 58cm XR800 from maybe five years ago, with a cut-down 1" threadless steerer. I've got a 1-1/8" Ritchey Comp stem on it with a shim and a 4mm spacer and a cable hanger for a 1" steerer also acting as a spacer. (You can't see the 4mm spacer under the flared hanger, but it's there.) It's a tight fit:
Any of you have solutions and/or photos of how you've dealt with this situation? I will try to find another hanger tomorrow. I guess I just need a deeper-drop hanger, or one with less adjuster and a shorter cable stop.
What I really need is a 1"-steerer (threadless) cyclocross fork with a 220mm or longer steerer. This one's a Kinesis aluminum.
How about a cyclo cross cantilever brake cable hanger - the kind that bolts through the hole in your fork?

I have a friend with this set up on exactly the same bike as the base thread poster and that hanger flexes far too much to be entirely safe, in both of our opinions. I don't recommend going to this, based on my experience trying to make it work better and failing. I use hanger steer tube based hanger on my X-cross and I think that hanger/cable arrangement, which uses the fork steer tube for leverage is far stronger and safer.
