Brian,
Training for a marathon requires a lot of hard work and discipline. I
strongly suggest you try to find a group that is training together. You
will need to learn how to run for extended periods of time and eat and drink
on the move. Going from a 4 mile run to a 26 mile run is not a simple
thing. Only by interacting with some veterans can you avoid making mistakes
that all rookies seem to make. The plan is secondary, the group is
important. Plus having a group will make it easier to get up and out for
those long runs when it is either raining or 90F and humid.
Usually someone at a running shoe store can direct you to a local group. By
the way according to my experience by this time before the marathon you
should be doing at least 8 to 10 miles at least once a week. So hop to it
if you are serious.
Good luck,
Bob

Quoted message said:I am 31 and have been running on and off for about 10 years (sometimes with
long pauses...). At most I run 3-4 days a week, around 3-4 miles each run.
I am wondering what sort of plan I should be on if I am preparing for the
Chicago Marathon on Oct 9. I see a lot of info on the web, but I don't see
a lot that tells you how to customize a plan based on your current state.thanks,
