Saying diets do not work is total tosh. Failing to stick with a diet is the major cause of her problems.
Do you hear a difference between "going on a diet" and "eating healthy for life"? She's given up on the first -- which is probably a good thing. That's an artificial constriction on intake that will be abandoned as soon as "goal" is reached.
Eating healthy for life seems a much more balanced approach, and likely to be more successful.
