But how do I get my walking time down into the 13 minute per mile range
from my current 16 mpm without interspersing running?

I'd appreciate advice on how to improve walking speed, technique,
conditioning, etc. I am not looking to become a race walker, just faster
    at walking.

I did some walking for a little while during recovery from an injury. The hard
part is learning to keep pushing the pace -- at first, it requires a fair
amount of mental effort to sustain even a modest heart rate. One thing to
experiment with is to try training with a heart rate monitor. I think at least
part of it boils down to trying to push the pace, which you've got to do if
you want to be up around 12mpm. Another thing you could try is walking on the
treadmill, and putting the pace just slightly out of your comfort zone (e.g.
    4mph or 15mpm)

    Cheers,
