Last summer I was doing some late night work downtown, and riding home
through the inner city around 2 am. I generally move very fast (traffic
speed) on the roads at night to avoid people-trouble, but this night I made
the mistake of going at a more leisurely pace on the sidewalk.
I spotted a group of 3 or 4 guys up ahead, and they seemed awfully slow so
I didn't think they could cause me any trouble. But as I swerved to pass
them they moved to intercept me, and I literally ended up hitting one of
the fat guys right in the belly (absorbed the shock).
Turns out they were drunk and luckily somewhat friendly; although I didn't
have any smokes, I threw them a couple matchbooks and hauled ass out of
there. Close call.
So I would say, my advice is to move fast and avoid people.
