What would be better for snacks

en route etc? Dried fruit, or what?

Anything energy-giving: Kendal Mint Cake and Mars Bars are my
favourites, though others find these mess up their blood sugar levels.
Too much dried fruit can have a laxative effect.

But be aware that what you're getting with mint cake and Mars
etc is simple carbohydrate, i.e. a quick fix. For more
sustained energy you need complex carbohydrate, e.g. bananas
(except they tend not travel well) or biscuits or even
sandwiches, if you think you can stand it. Or you could take
the extreme view and pack a tub of margarine or butter and a
    bag of sugar...

I agree with you Paul about the 'quick fix' of sugar based snacks, and of
course you can get headaches etc when this stuff goes out of you system.

I try and mix things like nuts, bananas, chocolate/mint cake, biscuits and
if you like the stuff, jerky. A good solid brekkie is vital, and so is
fluid intake; how many of us has seen a hiker with only a couple of litres
of water with them, try that for a couple of days and see how your headache
    feels.

I work on the idea of a good meal first thing in the morning and last thing
at night, and graze the rest of the day on good snacks, plus plenty to drink

    Richard
