IGNORE him. Simply, do not post to any of his posts or replies.

You are just encouraging him to stay. Even your one line comments are
enough to allow him to spew his garbage.

It was very nice here without him. Don't Feed The Troll.

Hells Bells! When I am not here this group is as dead as a door nail. Whole
days go by with no one posting anything, at least not anything worth
reading. I light a fire under this group and get discussions going. See my
common denominator post to the thread "Whither Pedal Steer" for an example
of how I can spark up this group. And I do it all for free too - no charge!

Ed Dolan is one of the good guys here. Yes, I am a bit of a troll, but I am
a good troll. We all know who is the bad troll and his first name also
happens to be the same as mine. So now we have it clear. There is Ed the
good troll and Ed the bad troll.

    Perhaps I'll entertain some 'libruls' and some nerds;
For others let me be conciser:
What ARBR needs? Folks playing nicer!

Perhaps as at least a small step in the right direction - at
long, long last - Mr. Dolan has admitted:

Good TROLL's a blatant oxymoron; TROLLS are TROLLS.
Good manners and respect are not among their goals
    For self-improvement, now or ever;
    Don't be a TROLL; it isn't clever!

    Denominator? Dominator, I would say,
Is more the word that should be used for Ed's display
    Of overstated misthought drivel
    About a tadpole's steering swivel.

Right now some eight of eighteen postings in that thread
Were written by a single guy - pigheaded Ed -
    Ignoring ev'ry indication
    He might be causing aggravation.

I most sincerely wish that Mr. Dolan could
Catch on that TROLLS are rarely (never?) seen as good.
Ed's use of simple (slight) discretion
Would make each thread a finer session.

The spark that fired discussion on this theme
Was Jerry's questions - not opinions wrong, extreme!
I think more questions might be posted
If newbies felt more gently hosted.

Most people don't like conflict; they avoid this group
Because a visit here's like stepping in dog [censored],
    With pointless ego-driven quibbling
And cheap potshots that weren't worth scribbling.

This forum maybe still could be revamped, rescued,
If only people posting here would be less rude.
The reason for this newsgroup's being
Is not to flaunt folks disagreeing.

Before one posts at ARBR he should take this test:
Is what I'm asking here a relevant request?
And if your post is not a question,
    Please heed this pertinent suggestion:

The only other valid reason one should send
A message to this newsgroup forum, in the end,
Is that some folks will WANT TO READ IT.
If not - then plainly we don't need it!

A TROLL most often writes indulging his foul mood,
And whether he's defensive, pushy or he's crude,
The bottom line: No one's enjoying
Him or his posts; he's just annoying.

    So, hey, let's all - including Ed - clean up this place;
Let's use a bit more tact, diplomacy and grace.
The key to perking up this forum
May be just basic good decorum.

But if you need, you have to be a TROLL, then I'm
Compelled to beg you: please don't make your postings rhyme!
'Cuz that's my schtick, my own strange styling,
Which leaves - I hope - most readers smiling.

This is the best and most entertaining post I have ever read on a newsgroup.
Many thanks Wayne. I am saving it to My Documents and I will show it to
everyone who knows me. They will all die laughing because you have got me
    pegged to perfection.

You are the poet laureate of ARBR, that is for sure. Do you knock these gems
off in a few hours or do you spend days on them I wonder? I could never
write a line of verse myself but I surely do admire and envy those who can.

Nevertheless, you raise a lot of serious issues that concern me about
newsgroups, this one in particular. I am going to study your poem and get
back to you with where I disagree with you. Stay tuned.

    Best Regards,

Ed Dolan the Great - Minnesota

  4. Forgive me for top posting this once, but the poem that follows is a must
read for all of us here on ARBR. I am going to comment and take issue with
Wayne about a few items, but by and large I do agree with his thinking about
how newsgroups should function. I only wish we could all be as civilized and
mellow as he is, myself included. In fact, I am going to try to ameliorate
some of my worse characteristics so that we can have a better newsgroup.
Believe it or not, I care about this group and that has always been my
focus. I want it to thrive and to be an interesting and exciting place to
    visit.

Well, yes and no. The other Ed was a very bad troll for a whole list of
reasons. The only purpose of my posts is to get discussions going. I do
thrive on disagreement, but there is never any reason why the disagreement
can't be civil. I hate to call others names, but it is hard to resist when
they are calling you names. Mostly, I try to keep everything [censored] for tat. If
others are civil with me, then I am civil with them. But maybe I could make
more allowances than I do. I will work on that.

No, we are having a serious discussion about pedal steer on that thread. I
hope others will find it enlightening. The original post was going nowhere
until I replied to it. I did it in strong terms so as to spark other
replies. I think I have succeeded within the boundaries of proper newsgroup
    etiquette.

That thread is an example of what good newsgroup posting should be all
about. The groundwork has been laid and everyone is free to contribute their
two cents worth. I will read what others have to say and so can everyone
else who is interested. And then we can reply or not as we wish. What could
    be better?

As previously mentioned I thrive on disagreement. I know that others here do
too. But you may be right that most folks do not care for it. But
newsgroups are not like email to your friends. It is a public forum and a
certain amount of rough and tumble goes with it. It is like politics that
way. That is what makes a newsgroup exciting for me. I do not want it to be
    like email.

Newsgroups which stay on topic overly much are deadly dull. I do look in on
other newsgroups from time to time and some of them are nothing but question
and answer sessions. This sort of thing kills a newsgroup except for the
extremely dull types. A bit of off topic is healthy for a newsgroup. We need
to range widely in our discussions, Otherwise, we will die of boredom.

That is uppermost in my mind - how to compose a message that others will
want to read and enjoy. I know that is your chief concern too as witness
your recent postings to this newsgroup.

It is not my intention to aggravate others, but I do like to say clearly and
forcefully what is on my mind. I appreciate it when others do the same for
me. That is the excitement factor that I seek. I think it is mainly just a
difference in styles which puts others off.

I am often saying funny things which seems to go right over everyone's head.
But I keep hoping they will get on to me eventually. Note my signature for
instance. Some guy did a search on the Internet and could not find me
there, so he said there is no way I could be Great. Very funny I thought! In
other words, am I poking fun at all the blowhards on ARBR or do I really
think I am Great. A real conundrum for some apparently.

Wayne, there is no one else who could possibly do what you do. How about a
little background on you as you are a very unusual person to be able to
write such great topical verse. Did you learn how to do this or does it just
come naturally to you? A poet who is also a thinking man like you is very
dangerous, especially here on ARBR where we are mostly just clods.

    Best Regards,

Ed Dolan the Great - Minnesota
