If a mechanism has been established, such as free radical damage to cell constituents, then markers of oxidative stress are at least good indirect evidence. In this case, however, it is not clear exactly what the point of the experiment is. If the researchers want to say that one should avoid foods high in squalene because this will have the effect of raising cholesterol, they should say it. If they do, it will be clear that they are totally unaware of the evidence that has built up over the past 15 years or so which demonstrates that only oxidized cholesterol is unhealthy, but at least there will be an ostensible point to what they spent plenty of time and money doing.

Cholesterol oxidation happen when the molecules are sirculating in the body for an extended period, because receptors that should capture the molecules for uptake into cells for degradation, don't work or work too slow.
In such cases increasing cholesterol synthesis is a bad idea, because it will in turn build up the amount of oxidiced cholesterol too.
