  1. A pound of body fat has about 3500 calories of stored energy. 500
calories per day per week on average gives a 1 pound loss. It is
suggested not to exceed 2 pounds per week or so to ensure max long term
health and potential of staying at the new weight. One consideration that
involves current weight etc., if one is eating many calories 500/1000
fewer a day might not impact health but if one starts at only slightly
more calories per day and loses the same the health impact is greater.
If one is very obese weight loss should always be done with the help of a
doctor who can evaluate health impact of high calorie loss plans.

If I want to diet simply by cutting caloric intake, how do I determine
    how much calories to cut?
Is there a formula dependent upon current body weight, height, etc?
