  1. I believe the spacing of the cassette cogs will make this incompatible.

    If your current shifter/brake levers are worn out, you could try
    sourcing some fresher ones on an online auction site.

    If this is a bike that sees mostly on road use, I'd consider using some
    old fashioned friction thumb shifters like these:
    http://www.rivbike.com/webalog/shifters_derailleurs/17097.html
    with your choice of brake lever.

    You can most likely get them for even cheaper than the Rivendell site,
    that's just what sprung to mind. :P
