I've heard that 52/39 is too small a jump to properly utilise 9
speed. I'd agree, it's all very nice having so many options 90% of
the time, but I'm quite happy to trade that in to be happier for the
10% of the time!
what is a good guess for the size I need [1], or do I go half way to the
ratio I want and change the back block for a
12/25 next time?
Obviously this is going to be a compromise. I don't want to end up with
2 ranges and no overlap.
[13] I know its almost an impossible question, but I haven't ridden
anything with low ratios before, I've just got by. My hack is
worse 52/42 14/24. As a guide I run out of gears at about a 1 in 8
(I think).

Forget about changing rings and all that nonsense. Instead swap th
12/23 for something like a 13/26 or even a 13/28. You should then b
able to climb up walls. 9 speed is plenty for me..i refuse to go 1
speed with all the extra cost involved for a sprocket i'm neve
going to use
