    Hi.

I am posting this question here rather than to an
excercise or sports related group since there is
a lot of mythology around gym-land and I really
    want more sound information.

Is it possible to do "too much excercise"? Is there
a point where excercise can hurt rather than make
    the heart healthier?

In my case I usually excercise each day. I spend
between 1 and 2 hours in the gym on a bike, cross-
country machine and rowing machine. I usually
have the resistance at a level where I need to
make some effort but where I can last for about
an hour non-stop. I aim to maintain a reasonable
level over longer periods rather than shorter periods
at high intensity. (The rest of my life is mostly at
    a desk)

After that I usually do some resistance (weight)
training but the real emphasis of my excercise is
on cardio-vascular because I try to loose weight
and keep it off. (Although I am currently around
6kg over my BMI ideal maximum, but working to
get rid of that.) I am 36.

In my case lots of people in my family have a history
of heart disease - particularly cholesterol related.

I am not sure if that can be genetic?

I am doing all this excercise but have never felt
amy symptoms - pain, chest congestion etc. On
the contrary, I feel great and the excercise makes
me feel like I am on a high.

But am I doing too much?

    Thanks in advance.

    /T.

I don't think you are doing too much at all. I spend about 1.5 hrs/day 5 days
a week in a gym actually doing cardio and 3 days a week for 45 mins. doing
weight training. I work out to the point of sweating a lot and tiredness but
not to exhaustion. I had several heart attacks over 10 years ago with some
damage to the heart. My cardiologist says this exercise regime along with
medications is probably what has kept me alive. If you have any back problems
you might wish to go easy on the rower.

Heart disease can definitely be genetic - i.e. family history plays are role
in your odds of getting it.
