surface, well, at least they did with last years ones.

Even so, I'd have expected a couple of bricks or stones (I
sometimes carry a ceramic tile or three in the car) would be
better...

Many a campsite I have visited recently have banned these - unless you use
them on bricks. One of the sites I visited had a no stoves on the floor
policy - altjough when they asked me what I was using let me use the trangia
on the grass.
