"There was a story on the other day that supposedly it's been
determined that the calcium in milk is not useful to humans."
Human health and nutrition are not simple enough for quick newspaper
stories. And, science still has a great deal more to learn about both
before we can claim anything like complete understanding.
Nevertheless, we have to simplify most things in order to communicate
to others.
Calcium in milk is available and useful. What is under suspicion is
that the combination of calcium with other ingredients in milk,
especially high protein, does not protect against osteoporosis as was
assumed in the days when each nutrient was considered in isolation.
In other words, calcium in milk may not be as dietarily useful as was
thought in the past.
Most international RDA's and equivalent recommendations are for a
lower calcium level than that of the US NAS/NIH. It's not a question
of eliminating calcium or milk, just a question of balance.
