the basal metabolic rate. yes. otherwise the pal has to be considered as
    well.

It can not. We humans differ from each other in thousands of ways,

well.. the genetic variation in different energy needs from the calculated
mean basal metabolic rate based on sex, age and lean body mass is about
+/-10% of energy maximum (that is for 95% of the population). I think that
counts as a legitimate tool for estimation.
also to be taken into account as well, of course, is the physical acvitity
level, but someone already mentioned that.

and lots of people digest food so completely that they need far fewer
calories than the official averages. I'm supposed to need 3000
calories/day (6'4", active); in fact I'm at 1500/day to keep my
    weight steady.

hmm.. now, it depends on your build. if your weight is mostly mucles you
need more calories than if it were mostly fat. but i really doubt that you
can stay on your weight with 1500kcal a day at your size..

how much do you weight and what do you do on an average day (sports/work i
    mean) if I may ask?
