  1. "What can be estimated is REE, Resting Energy Expenditure."

Not even that, for some of us. My REE is supposed to be 1600
    kcal/day. It's obviously less - I'm at 1500 kcal/day intake to keep
my weight steady, and I charge all over the landscape. I've a
neighbour who has to keep her consumption below 1000/day just to keep
from gaining weight from her current 300 lb.

Averages have their limits when applied to human beings. When it
comes to response to inhaled solvents, I've years of experience to
back my estimate that averages don't apply to 15% of us. I've no
reason to believe that our response to nutrients is significantly
    different.

What people believe they are eating is usually 10-50% underestimated.
To find exactly your daily intake (and also expenditure) you need to
stay in a cage for a week or so where each and every calory is
    measured with high precision.

Not easy to do,highly uncomfortable and very expensive. Really seldom
    done today.

So as a thumb rule, multiply your estimate with a factor of 1.5-2.
(Many do not count chocolate bars etc.,the beers for dinner and
evening etc. Red wine and all other with alcohol is most often
forgotten. Together with many other things containing combustible
things in body, or made available for digestion by bacteria which
perhaps you are not aware of in intestines. Like forgetting counting
energy from inulin in Jerusalem artichokes (JA) in spring or also in
autumn.(In autumn, bacteria breaks down inulin,in spring, JA is
breaking down inulin itself into glucose to use for growth of new
    plant)
