part of American life and they're vital to our economy." Do you think
Congress will be able to agree on an immigration bill which President
Bush can sign this year?The president delivered his speech to the United States Chamber of
Commerce on Thursday, attempting to bolster support for passage by
Congress of a comprehensive immigration bill.Both the Senate and the House of Representatives have passed competing
immigration legislation; but the two houses are far apart, particularly
on whether or not to offer amnesty or eventual citizenship or to try to
curtail immigration.Recognizing that the two houses of Congress -- and competing opinions
within them -- are far apart on whether or how to deal with many
questions involving immigration, the president insisted that such
problems would not be accepted as an excuse for not passing the
legislation he seeks."The difficulty of this task is no excuse for avoiding it," President
Bush told his audience, from who he received a round of applause.Making clear his determination to move such legislation, the president
reiterated that, "The United States Congress needs to pass a
comprehensive bill."Pressing his point, President Bush asserted that, "The vast majority of
illegal immigrants are decent people. They're hardworking people.
They're people who love their families."Perhaps more importantly, President Bush noted, "They are part of
American life and they're vital to our economy."
President Bush would suck a road-killed skunks pecker to please his
