Whilst out cycling yesterday the bolt that attaches the seat on my bike to the seat post snapped.
The bike is relatively new (about 10 months) and doesn't get that much use (probably, on average) 4 hours a week - all off road. It wasn't a top of the range bike (about £500 new) but I have never experienced this sort of failure before. Is it common?

Quite right too. I have spares on each of my bikes. I reckon that should insure me against ever having a failure.

Like that spare tube I've never used. The only on-road puncture I've had in the last 12 years I had to patch in situ, because it was on a fixie and I don't carry a huge 15mm spanner to get the wheel off.
