Hi Mike,
Bring a cell phone (in case of emergency) and make sure it has good
coverage. Unless you are planning on going while its still winter, I'm
sure you will encounter other cyclists on your travels who even if they
don't want company for hundreds of miles, are likely to be friendly or
good meal mates. On a short ride one week ride I did along lake Ontario
we encountered several bike tourers (that we stopped to talk to) two
couples cyclists (one that had started in Vancouver), one single, and a
small group on a tour.
If the side of the road at random by yourself scares you, you can try
knocking on doors at farmhouses to ask farmers if you can set up camp
in their field, most canadians are friendly 🙂 The worst they can say
is no. Plot out on your map where campgrounds are as backup, and if you
find other tourers along your route that day you can potentially
double/triple up on a site in the campground to make the park fee less
(and you'll get a shower out of the deal)
