I would normally expect to do 14/15 miles on the South Downs in a little
over 5 hours. I do walk at a reasonable pace, but then stop on average
about 150 times to take a photo! Now, when in The Lakes or other
mountainous region, my walk time increases considerable. A lot more care is
needed on rocky paths, scrambles etc, (not to mention steep
ascents/descents) than on the paths/farm tracks of the South Downs.
However, being out in the open is we find important, and if it takes a
little longer than planned .... then so be it. Clare and I generally walk
on days when nothing else is planned, ensuring we are not committed to a
time.
