IIRC, Carl did not want to attend a training camp in Raleigh to train
with the others and especially work on the bane of US relay teams---DROPPING
THE DAMN BATON! Since King Carl declined, he was not on the relay. I
cannot remember his reasoning for not attending, but I thought it was a
mistake on his part. He is the greatest 100m runner ever and an even better
    relay man.

I don't know that Carl ever stated his reason, but he made that Olympics only
in the LJ , and I suspect didn't really think about the 4X100 until after he
pulled that LJ gold out of his hat. It was only at this point that the
decision of the team coach came to matter.

For Marion to be available to be selected for any relay, I believe that

will need to make the team in an individual event--either the 200 or the
LJ--and given her performance thus far, that may be a tall order.

I do not think this is true. The 4th place in the 100m traditionally is
on the relay yet otherwise is not on the team and you usually want a 6th
person to assist in the rounds.

Remember that Marion finished 5th in the 100, which I think makes her position
a lot more tenuous than if she had finished 4th. Also, the drug issue causes a
lot of bad press for both USATF and USOC, and I would expect a lot of pressue
behind the scenes to keep her out unless she actually earns a place by
finishing in the top 3 of an individual event.

I don't remember her time in the semi, but some people seemed to think she
ran well. If her problem is that she doesn't have the endurance currently
to last through all the rounds, she might still be an excellent
choice to run an early leg in the relays. That is, of course, laying
    aside all the drug issues.

Question: if the team advances because Marion ran in, say, the first round,
and she is eventually disqualified, what happens to a whole different squad
that wins gold in the final? Are they disqualified because MJ helped them get
    there?

Keep watching the news for Jerome Young stories and you'll know. See

I watched the 100 finals. It looked like she got a very slow start (even by
her standards--lack of racing?). She gained some on the field, but didn't seem
to have her normal top gear. This could be a lot of things: (a) she'still
lacking some strength after the baby; (b) lack of endurance; (c) lack of recent
racing/race fitness; (d) lack of steroids.

If her problem is a lack of racing (what I'm guessing), she may improve for the
    200. If it's endurance, she'll have even less chance in the 200 than she had
in the 100. The :LJ is normally not her strong suit (poor technique), but it
might be her ticket to Athens because we only have 1 or 2 women with the A
    standard.

If Marion ran in the semis and failed a drug test (unlikely), they would DQ the
whole 4X100 team. But they would not DQ for drug evidence that came later.
The Jerome Young case (where Michael Johnson stands to lose his 4X400 gold) is
defferent because Young actually failed a drug test and USATF apparently held
back reporting it (that's the IAAF position) so Young was not eligible to run
in the Olympics. In Marion's case, at the time of the US Trials there is no
drug evidence against her. People should remember this. Tim Montgomery got a
letter from USADA saying that they were going after him, but Marion got no such
    letter--they just questioned her.
