A 1998 study (Stang & Snellman) found that only 45% of doctors surveyed used
anaesthesia. Within different specialisms, though, this figure varied, with
71% of pediatricians using anaesthesia, while only 25% of obstetricians
did. It doesn't report what proportion of circumcisions are done using
anaesthesia - only the proportions of practitioners.
Since then, the AAP has, after reviewing the evidence, said explicitly that
anaesthesia must be used. Hopefully, the numbers not using anaesthesia will
have decreased and will continue to do so.
