Road bike or mtb w/hp slicks, flat pavement, no wind, just cruising along
    at
that certain speed where you're comfortably within your aerobic
    envelope/comfort
zone - not dawdling, not hustling - just feeling good... the pace you
    could keep
    up for 3-4 hours...

You look at the speedo. What does it say? How old are you?

    Trek 700, 4 panniers (fair bit of junk/tools etc in `em) Armadillo's @ 100
    lbs+ total weight approx. 45 lbs. plus me - 8.5 stone @ 5`2". When I look
at the current speed it seems to show 12 - 15 mph. most of the time, but the
overall average is a depressing 9.5 most of the time. Age 64, and feeling it
    now! (note my sig1)

Why depressing?!? You're like Jack LaLane pulling a locomotive with his
teeth! Might not be fast, but strong as hell...

That diff is consistant with what I experience. When I'm hustling, I'll see a
lot of 17-18, some 20-21...and after it's all over the average will be more more
    like 15-16.
