    As I understand it, the rule of thumb is that a road bike is better for
    light off-road use than an off-road bike is for road use. Not being an
    experienced user of off-road bikes I can't really confirm that, but I
    get on fine with my road bike on the local cycle trail, which I think
    counts as "light off road" - and isn't even that light in places.

    The Cyclone may well be perfect for you - ask your LBS if they'll let
    you give it a trial run.

    I've just had a look at the Ridgeback website and I would say the
    Cyclone is a good bike for the money and /very/ suitable for your needs.

    I've owned a string of Ridgebacks and I've always been very happy with
    them. Replacements caused by theft/crash rather than dissatisfaction.

    Only -ve comment from me is that I've had to replace the headset on
    each bike due to very premature failure (ie less than 4000 miles).

    Full sus.

    You can get decent bikes with front sus only for less, but still not at
    this price point

    Me, and full suspension. Hardtails come cheaper - you can get decent
    hardtails down to five of six hundred.
