just breaking on sky news 3 British climbers die in snowstorms in Spains sierra nevada mountains.
Getting back to the point, some neighbours of ours have a house in the Alpujarras and have recently come back from a visit. There seems to be two versions of events circulating. The authorities are saying that the people involved were ill-equipped but other climbers who met them en-route have said that they were both approproiately equipped and experienced. One, however, took a fall and a knock to the head, which is why they holed up while the younger chap went for help. The rest we know.

An english chap I knew, only from a telephone conversation, had died in bad weather high up a spanish mountain a couple of weeks before this, he (aged 39) and his girlfriend (25) were fit, apparently experienced and well equipped. He had managed to phone a colleague in England to alert the mountain rescue that they were trapped and digging in. Yet they both perished outside their snowhole so I imagine had decided to try a descent and were caught out.
