Okay, I have bumped my one hour ride from 13 to 15 miles. It might not seem
like much of a leap, but it is a lot more work for this newbie 🙂 If I keep
this up, I might even buy a road bike by the end of summer (or at least some
street tires). Of course I had my first wipe-out also, but that was only
    due to my stupidity....

Just keep at it and you will find your endurance and speed creeping up
regardless of your age or present condition. And I have also managed
totally stupid wipe outs at about 2 MPH turning around and hitting
debris in full view of my grandchildren. The only fatality was the
digital camera in my levi's pocket, which got kind of squished, but
Wal-mart gave me a new replacement, no questions asked. It's the only
big store in walking distance where I won't drive and can't park a bike
without fear of it getting stolen, so yeah, I do buy some stuff there.
Just keep riding, even if the bike breaks, carrying it home will count
as good exercise too. Been there, done that, too. Broken pedal.
