Yesterday, I made my longest ride ever. It was a 130-mile route from here to
Natchitoches (Nack'-ih-tush), LA, and back with members of the local bike club.
We averaged 17.2 for the trip, and, boy, was I knackered at the end! A ride of
that length and intensity turns the smallest pains over time into a major hurt.

No kidding. I'm still jealous though.

My lower back was killing me, and I have a really sore hamstring again.

Even though I have a "strong" lower back from
weightlifting, I was still getting lower back pain
(really fatigue not true pain) on long rides.
    Additional high-rep hypertensions solved this
problem for me. As a bonus they also work your hams.

    How flexible are you?

About lifting weights? Not very. I don't like it at all, so I refuse.

This was early-season soreness. I'll be stronger and able to handle the

    longer

    I appreciate the good-intentioned advice, though. 🙂

Do you perform any sort of weight bearing exercise to keep up your bone
density. I know you hate BUYcycling, but there was an excellent article a
couple of issues back about the lack of bone density in long distance
cyclists. You don't want to be breaking hips in the future, Kev.... But
congratulations on the ride. Natchitoches is a neat town. I went to high
school there for a year. Kind of a classic Old South town....

I thought that article was bs. If all you ever did was either do long rides
or sit on the couch, maybe. I don't know about most of you, but I do other
forms of exercise. Heck, probably just climbing/descending the two flights
of stairs between where I park the bike in the parking garage and the main
building lobby probably does something for bone density, and I do that every
    day.

I remember a study where if kids just jumped up and down for five minutes a
day and it had a tremendous measurable effect on their bone density. So you
could just do that -- jump up and down -- and prevent all kinds of problems.

Probably, but many people live on ground level, or take the elevator.
Note that the article also pointed out that the intensity of your
workouts was a major factor: sweating caused a significantly
accelerated depletion of calcium compared to an easier workout. It was
really only a factor for people who were on their bikes for several
hours a day, nearly every day.

But how many cyclists do that routinely? Jumping rope would probably do
it, too. I just try to get on the treadmill for a half-hour once a week
or so when soccer season isn't going. During the season, refereeing
soccer games gives me more than enough weight-bearing exercise.

Really? I haven't found many guys who don't find a
perfect [censored] to be exciting. :-)

I was thinking more about your ham/glute/lower
    back flexibility.

Can you touch your toes? Can you do it while
maintaining an arch in your back?
