I watched both prangs again in slow motion today because I couldn't work out
last night in either instance what brought him down.
In neither case did the road nor the bike seem to be the problem - on both
occasions he was out of the cleat with his leg fully extended before he
fell, as if he was expecting/anticipating the crash.

Presumably that was after he had got things wrong and was preparing
    for going down.

In the first crash the front wheel slipped out from under him. Not
judging the camber on the roundabout properly, hitting a patch of
    grease?

The second one looked like he just took the wrong line through a
    corner.

    Maybe the pressure had
gotten to him or his middle ear/balance was out of wack because he was one
hell of a mtb rider before his road career and those kiddies really can
ride. Just a really bad day for a good rider?

Too much time worrying about Ullrich breathing down his neck and not
enough concerntrating on the road, after the first crash he was
    probably in shock.

A lot of riders didn't look comfortable riding the course on TT bikes.<

Is the geometry/stability on a tt bike that different to a roadie - the head
tube angle looks steeper but are they THAT much more deadly?

TT bikes have a shorter wheel base, more rigid frame, you sit further
forward over the pedals. They also don't steer as well and can have
solid wheels to reduce drag which can effect maneoverability.

But it depends. Lance looks as comforable maneovering around through
corners on his TT bike as his road bike. Though according to the
commentators he spent alot of time in windtunnels getting a bike that
both suited his riding and had low windresistance.

And it would also depend on how much time you have spent riding on the
TT bike. Discovery do a fair amount of preparation I understand.

also Lance didn't even use a solid rear wheel, guess he deemed the course tricky enough not to warrant the use of a solid rear wheel and it also had some hills in it.

and lo and behold he had easily the best time.

It wouldn't suprise me if the reason Lance spent so much effort and
expense on getting his TT bike right for the Tour was just so he could
    win that stage.

Rasmussen who only wanted a stage win and the polka dot jersy and
probably didn't think too much about the time trials at all, until he
was riding in one with Ullrich challenging him for a podium finish.

Kind of shame for Rasmussen in a way. If he'd done as well as he had
in the mountains and was defending 7th in the GC he probably wouldn't
have had any problems, conisdered it a terrific result and something
to build apon for next year.

To have a bike that isn't terribly aero is one thing, but to have a bike
that won't go at all is unforgivable. There should have been some bum
    kicking amongst the mechanics.

Does anyone know what the actual problem was?

I also heard Phil & Paul banging on about the solid wheel being hard to
steer, but I can't see how a rear sold wheel effects it. I can see how
cross wind can effect the bike. The only thing that is touching the
ground is a small oval footprint of the tyre. Even smaller with the
higher tyre pressures that they run on TT setups. What is effecting
    tight steering\maneoverability?

Yeah I thought about that, but surely these bikes are also as light a
possible, so you are not going to wack a heavy wheel on the back? Or
are you? They should be around the same weight has a standard wheel.
Though I've never had the pleasure of fondling one of these 'steeds of
    speed'.
