  1. Anyone have expeience or recommendations regarding this... I've been riding about 4 years, including
centuries and 2 summer rides across France riding every day in heat, humidity, rain, etc., and I've
never had any kind of crotch rash. Cool weather, riding less (maybe 2-30 mile rides/week) and
suddenly I have a mild upper inner thigh rash about 3-4 inches in diameter both sides next to
scrotum. Not sore or very sensitive, but then I'm very careful about keeping it clean and dry and
cycling clothes clean too, becaue I don't want it to interfere with riding. Waxes and wanes a bit -
reddish but no welts. No itching. Haven't used any special creams or ointments or any medicines. Any
suggestions? Thanks, Steve J. Berkeley, CA

A dermatologist if it doesn't clear up soon. There are a few possibilities that would require some
    kind of treatment.

My first question would be some kind of allergic reaction- to a new laundry detergent, change in
shorts washing technique, change in bath soap, new shorts, new chamois cream, etc.

If the margin is redder than the main section of the region, and some of the rider's usual routes
are in woods, its worth considering the possibility of Lyme, though I doubt that this is the cause.

    That's a good possibility.

It may also be a mild case of fungal infection, which generally will respond to a topical antifungal
agent. I've used athlete's foot oitments for this sort of thing in the past. It may not be more than
a red area now, but if it's fungal, and left untreated, it will get worse, and it *will* hurt.

After the shower, wipe it down with rubbing alcohol. Before the ride use a bit of bag balm/Dr
Naylors...also after the rubbing alcohol use the Dr Naylors/BB..medicated and will help.

    Dear Steve,

As others have pointed out, a dermatologist will be far more helpful. He might even ask you sternly
about the morals of your seat, which may be happily re-infecting or merely irritating the same area
again and again, no matter how carefully you clean your clothes and carcass.

(Think of fungus, oil, and wax.)

You may think that nice seats don't do this, but even the nicest seats may develop deplorable habits
and need to be reported to the health department.

If you are living in sin with a leather saddle, a blood test is advisable before marriage.

Let's hope that your problem is not the result of the notoriously loose morals of Berkeley, where
seat-swapping parties are legendary and sin stalks naked through the city streets.

But it would be nice if a new saddle fixed things.
