  1. What happened to Erik Vendt? He's not at any of the latest big swim
meets. Did he join the Navy Seals as he was threatening to do?

What is the deal with Michael Phelps' program? At the World's he could
have medalled (probably gold) in 200m Fly and 400IM. Instead he's
messing around with 100m free and 400m free. Okay, wants to try and
make a mark in freestyle swimming, and take on the mighty Hackett and
Thorpe to spice up the competition. Didn't go great, however he did
get gold in 200m freestyle. So fast forward to Nationals, and he
doesn't swim 100m freestyle or 400m freestyle where he could have
gotten valuable experience in those events. Instead he puts 200m
butterfly back into the mix. Where's the logic? In Beijing he's going
to swim 200m IM, 400m IM, and 200m Fly, unless he's foolish. So he
uses the run up to see what he can do in some other events. So why not
continue seeing what he can do in freestyle at Nationals?

  2. My guess is that the only thing greater than Phelp's talent is his
estimation of his talent. In order to be unchallenged as the greatest
swimmer at the moment he has to compete against the other greatest
swimmers of our time, and they don't swim IM or 200 fly. IM lacks the
depth of talent of the freestyle events. Freestyle has VDH, Thorpe and
Hackett who are far more challenging to beat than the IM swimmers of
    the world.
