Racing cyclist deaths

What gives? These incidents took place around the entire planet.
Three of these five incidents involved either a car, truck or bus. One
of them was a guy going the counterclockwise on a clockwise course
(neither rider seeing the other, apparently). The 5th, we don't know
anything about. Only 1-2 of these incidents involved actual
racing...And I'm sorry, but racing anywhere South of the border is
normally a balls-to-the-walls undertaking (myself having raced
extensively in Mexico).

The bottom line is, helmets are useless when they encounter several
TONS of external force delivered in an instant. With that much force,
essentially, the helmet ends up being the instrument of death.

The only thing "epidemic" like is that the writer found 5 cycling
accidents to talk about...But I'd be willing to bet that a typical week
foinds this many cycling deaths (or more) worldwide.
