  1. I took part in a race while I was taking cough syrup and antibiotic. The previous week I had cought a cold but last days I felt good enough The problem is that during the race I faced difficulties.I sustained the high pulse while I was clibing ,ussually anaerobic ,but I could not produce power.I have not a power meter to realize it ,but that was obvious.Does anybody know if the antibiotic influence the performance?

Yes, Antiobiotics interfere with performance. In general antibiotics inhibit several anabolic ("cell production/regeneration"😉 pathways, thus causing a net catabolic ("cell destruction"😉 state which will cause a red blood cell and Hemoglobin reduction as well as a small muscle catabolism enough to reduce significantly your power output. I am suspecting you were taking a broad-spectrum antibiotic like amoxicillin whic is a pretty catabolic antibiotic.

An alternative for bronchitis, pharyngitis, otitis, amidgalytis and rest of ORL infections is an antibiotic called Azitromicine which you only take for 3 days (1 pill/day) and in general does not cause muscle fatigue. For this you should 1st consult this to your doctor who will decide what kind of antibiotic you should take.

My advice is to do 3-4 days completely off the bike and then another 3-4 days very easy on the bike. THis should allow to revert your slight catabolic state and get your power back.

    Cheers.

No, but the fact that you have a bacterial infection does. Stay home and rest if the doc puts you on antibiotics for, I'm guessing, a chest infection.

  4. Years ago, I had VO2 max testing done. There was a long waiting list, and I had waited a long time to get it done this particular time. Anyway, I came down with a cough before hand, so I took some cough medicine. Well, it made the test all weird. The coach was wondering what was up, as my heart was like 20 beats faster than usual. He stopped the test after just a few minutes.

After that experience, I just stopped riding through sickness. If riding is your job, and you have to get out there or lose your job, then well, you have to race (at least start). But if it isn't, don't race.

  5. Thanks for the replies and your usefull advices guys.🙂
