Time: 1:08:39 (clock); 1F40; ? OA (results not yet posted online). For about 15 minutes I was 1st
masters winner as well (see below).
Course: flat out-and-back through Florida scrub; roads monitored but not closed to traffic
(in which I enter the wacky world of masters running)
This was my first 15K and required about 4 hours' travel from Tampa to the other side of the state
on the interstate of death. The 15K was the companion race to the "main course" (a 30K). A few
people from my running club went over for this; I roomed with the woman who won the 15K (another
masters runner, much much faster than I).
My goal for the race was to beat 1:10, and I'd planned to run the first half conservatively and then
pick it up after the turnaround. That isn't exactly what happened (splits below for anyone who's
interested, but I did hit the goal and ended up with 1:08:39 - 1st in my (new) age group and about
20s behind the masters winner.
At the awards ceremony the results got hosed up and they insisted I'd won 1st masters (there now
exists a photo of me holding the award and saying "but...but..."😉. I knew there was a problem when
they called me up again for the 1st AG award. Finally all was straightened out and awards rightfully
awarded. I'd never been first in my age group before (and it's not likely in local races), so I was
very pleased.
Also: The coach of my running club broke the exact-age record for 30K for his age (65). Broke it in
little tiny pieces.
