My lactate threashold is about 83-85% of my max. A lot of races here are 10-15 mile climbs. Should I ride at a high tempo pace of 85-88% or go higher 90-95% and risk blowing up and actually creating a slower time. Any suggestions?

Pretty hard to control your heart rate when you're in the lead group of the peleton. You've either got the fitness to stay with them or you get dropped.
I haven't worked out my lactate threshold but from experience I do this.
My max HR is 194
I can ride all day at 178.
If I'm near the front with 5kms to go and I'm still under 178 I feel confident I'll be in with a chance.
I can belt out the last 3kms at around 188 BPM.
In the sprint I don't know how I'm going but I always hit my max at the end of a race unless I've given up...During the race I do this...
I have my POLAR set to cadence and try and keep it at 98 to 100 throughout the whole race and try and keep my heart rate as low as possible...keep it in the easiest gear to maintain the 100 cadence.
If you're not fit you will have no control over your heart at all...
