Quote of the day (from non-riders)

I heard variously "YEEAHHH!" from some guy the other day and "That was
awesome!" by some girls I think were cute (Damn winter weather gear)...
I find it endlessly amusing that it's easier to ride down some of the
hills on campus than walk them... snow and ice ;)

Yes, the one administering single malt scotch for free. I met her in
the Heathrow Airport. She had no unicycling comments as I had no
unicycle, but she was more than happy to ensure I had a full sampling
regimen in place before noon.

well this one's not original or anything... in fact, it's definitely in
the running for the "Most Mindless Reaction" Award among all the
standard responses that go around... but i think it's really hilarious
when people shout from their cars "YOU SUCK!!!!!" it always brings a
smile to my face. i can just imagine them explaining to whoever's in
the car with them "jeez, sorry for the sudden outburst... i just hate
those damn unicyclists so much." and then the other person might say
"oh no, it's ok, i agree completely, and at least he knows that he
sucks now." i get more positive reactions, but sometimes it's the
angry ones that are the most hilarious.

i should add that people yell at me when i'm distance riding, so it's
not like they saw me fall down or anything.

At the casino on Friday night, a kid asked me why I ride 'that spikey
b*ke'.

I have no idea what he was on and a puzzled look to his mother
confirmed that she didn't have a clue what he meant either.
In the situation I decided to use the standard fall-back answer.

"Because I can."

when I was riding today at this park these two girls wanted to take my
picture for a "project" and showed me their sister who was trying to
learn which I though was kind of ironic but cool. I heard this guy
tell his kid "Look at that b*ke" but he later referred to it as a
unicycle but I was still kind of annoyed.

Problem is they usually don't have to explain themselves to their
car-mates. It's not like the person yelling "YOU SUCK" is driving with
their parents. The other guys in the car probably think he's being
clever.

Best recent quote:
I don't remember the exact words, but this was on December 24, from an
older woman being confronted by my sudden appearance on a Coker on a
dirt trail that gets relatively little cycle traffic. This woman had a
beautiful basset hound on a leash:
"Oh! That's the greatest thing ever!"

Not bad from a demographic that usually just gives us dirty looks!

I was riding at my local neighborhood park, inside a covered pavilion
where the floor is smoother than outside. I was working on one-foot
idling when a boy about 5-years-old stopped to watch me. I knew he was
there (behind me) but I continued to focus on my idling and he
continued to watch. After about 30 seconds, I lost my balance and
dismounted. I turned to the boy and said "Hi". He did not say anything.
He just smiled REAL BIG and went back to playing in the park. :)

My neighborhood is weird...out of the maybe 20-25 people who have seen
me ride so far, about 90% just look at me funny. The best I've gotten
so far is my only circus comment thus far from a little 6 year old
girl, who saw me riding and blurted out "You could join the circus!!".
I took it as a compliment, because at that age, most kids think the
circus people are talented.

I'm not really a circus fan, primarily because of the way circus
animals are treated, but the fact is that circus people -are-
talented.
