  1. The 'fly question:

I've never really paid much attention to the fly 'cause I couldn't swim it
and thought I'd never learn - thought my shoulders didn't rotate the right
    way.

But, when I went the to TI workshop one of things I really wanted to learn
was the body dolphin (just 'cause it looks cool, really). And, you know
how it is, once you start doing that, you've got to do *something* to
bring your head to the surface every now and again, and fly's as good as
anything. So, I've actually been doing some work on it and, surprisingly,
    really enjoying it.

But, my question is: does *everyone* create so much chop when they do it
or am I doing something weird? At first, I thought it was just the
flippers, but I've been doing some laps w/ out them and I still expect the
lifeguard to issue a small craft warning 'cause the surface is so rough.

    Does that sound typical?

Now the vent [long and skippable, it'll just make me feel better]:

I really shouldn't complain; the pool at my building is seriously
underused. I'm frequently swimming by myself or w/only one or two people.
But. . . sometimes people get in the pool, not, it seems, to swim but just
to hang out. Ok, it's not a venue for serious competitors, it's a
recreational asset. But, why do they have to hang out either right in the
middle of the pool or at the top or bottom of the pool, right in the
middle of the prime lap swimming real estate? Our pool is wider at the
shallow end and then narrows at the deep end. Anyone who just wants to
hang on the side of the pool and cool off could do it along the sides.
Likewise, anyone who wants to just bob around could do that in the wider
areas - the water's just as bouyant there.

To answer my own question, they simply haven't considered that they're
inconveniencing other people or they don't care. They've got as much right
to do whatever they want in the pool as I do, so I don't have any standing
to ask if they'd mind moving, and it's not that I feel I should have
priority over them 'cause I'm swimming and they're not. It's just that if
they can hang around in any part of the pool w/ equal comfort but lap
swimmers can only conveniently swim in a certain section of the pool, then
why not stay out of that section?

  2. It's is called human curtecy, which seems to lack in most parts of the world
these days, I find that most people move after the first time you just swim
around them, they then notice that you are training and give you your space
but every now and then you get this persistant [censored] who thinks he's very
funny and keeps on swimming infront of you.
With people like that just pretend you are in an open water race and you
didn't see him and swim right over him, that normally works just fine if he
still persists then come around next time with fists and deep kicks, but
that is only in extreme cases. An experienced swimmer would have given way
long time ago, a person like that needs a crack at the nut because he is
just plain stupid so do it well.

    Martha

Not sure where you live but you should look into a pool with designated
lap swimming lanes. Almost every pool I've ever seen has such a thing
so I'm actually a bit suprised that your pool apparently does not.
Perhaps check swimmersguide.com for local pool info.
