hi,
for my up coming disertation i am looking at using a nural net to produce a VPP profile, i have looked at the work done at biketechreview, here. I was wondering if there are any papers/articles/threads i can reference that you can point me to.

Are you familiar with the Normalised Power concept? That's presented on the Cycling Peaks software pages. Otherwise, that VPP issue has been discussed in this forum, little search should reveal something.
