Questions about Wheel Size

I am confused by your question. I just can't get across the gap from a bent axle to needing a new tire.

I hope his article answers your question. Most tires work better if they are wider than the rims they are mounted on.... up to a point. I think the 1-1/4" wide tire on a 1" wide rim would be appropriate. I think a 1" wide tire on a 1" wide rim would be too narrow a tire.

I'm sorry, I sometimes have trouble making a clear point. Also I used tire and wheel interchangeably when I shouldn't have.

There are two issues:

1. The rear axle is broken. It is from a wheel that is over 10 years old. I decided it would be easier to buy a new wheel then dealing with finding a new axle. This led me to look at new wheels and brings me to my next issue.

2. I'm looking for a new wheel. The old wheel says that its size is 27 x 1 1/4. When I measured it, it was 1" wide, which confused me. I found a cheap wheel that was 27 x 1, and I was wondering if my tire which says it's 27 x 1 1/4 on it will fit on the 27 x 1 tire.

If the hub and the rim are in good shape, why not just replace the axle? Head down to your local bike shop. They'll have replacement parts.
