1. Hello everyone,

I just registered here hoping, very much hoping that someone could help me out. Now I'm not a cyclist (though having done research on it, it sounds incredible) but I'm a currently non-paid writer :p working on a novel that has a chapter focusing on a large cycling race fund-raiser with around 1400 participants (fictional race). It would take place over a few days and would start in Los Angeles CA(Griffith Park) going to Las Vegas NV (Sunset Park). Camp would be set up in cities, towns along the way.

However, after three long nights of doing research on the Internet, I'm pretty much clueless as to how a cyclist would get from LA to LV without using any other form of transportation. I know that the I-15 could be taken, but I'm not sure if riding a bicycle on the I-15 (and exactly where on the I-15) is allowed. Does anyone know if there are less used/alternate routes to get there? I would be so grateful for help. Thank you.

  2. All is not lost, assuming I get a % of the royalties….

On another forum riding bikes along an interstate highway was being discussed. And I was shocked to learn that in some parts of California interstate highways are open to bicycles, since the interstate is the ONLY road available. Go figure… I would NEVER consider riding on the shoulder of an interstate highway here in Illinois.

OR considering that there are 1400 participants in this fictional race, which is a LOT of participants, that could be a basis for temporarily closing an interstate (hey it fictional right).

OR who says you have to ride a direct route. Go east to Needles CA then north to LasVegas (via Rt 62 and US 95).

If you want to be 100% sure, find the Dept of Transportation web site for CA and NV and ask them if riding a bicycle along the interstate is OK, you maybe surprised.

  3. Bikerguy2004, you are AWESOME! 😄 I think I'm going to lower the number of participants to around 1100 (which is still a lot) and go with the third option you proposed. I didn't know about using Rt. 62 and US 95. I checked them out and based on pictures I found those roads look bicycle friendly so that's the way they're going 😉

Late last night I gave up and changed the cycling fund-raiser to head toward San Diego County instead of Las Vegas, which I was able to map out a route for. However, thanks to your much appreciated assistance, they're headin' to Vegas once again! I'm so relieved. Thank you so much. Truly.

Oh, and if I'm ever able to publish this baby royalties are coming your way 😄
